Welcome to the Six Stages Framework
The Six Stages Framework (SSF) is a dynamic, psychologically grounded model developed to help individuals and organisations explore diversity, equity, and inclusion in a safe and non-judgemental space.
While often associated with addressing racism, the SSF goes beyond—it supports understanding of differences across identity, culture, gender, disability, neurodiversity, and sexual orientation. It provides the language, tools, and support needed to confront maladaptive behaviours like bias, harassment, bullying, and exclusion.

What Is the Six Stages Framework?
The SSF is a transformative, developmental tool that helps users—individuals, schools, organisations, and communities—progress through a journey of awareness, empathy, and change. It’s designed to meet people where they are and guide them toward inclusive growth.
The framework is made up of:
Six interconnected positive stages, which chart the journey toward inclusion, equity, and transformation.
A negative axis, beginning at Stage -1 and descending to -6, illustrating how unaddressed bias and inaction can lead to greater harm.
Importantly, the SSF is non-linear and action-based—a flexible model that supports personal reflection, systemic evaluation, and applied change.
The Development Journey
The Six Stages model includes six key development areas to support personal and organisational growth:
Awareness – Recognising biases and blind spots
Exploration – Gaining insight into lived experiences and systemic barriers
Understanding – Cultivating empathy and meaningful connection
Integration – Applying inclusive practices in real-world contexts
Collaboration – Building trust and partnerships across difference
Transformation – Achieving sustained, systemic change
These areas are detailed in the SSF membership portal, training programmes, and Dr. Shungu’s book.
Why the SSF Matters
The Six Stages Framework is more than a model—it’s a movement. Rooted in psychological practice and real-world application, it equips individuals and institutions to create safe, inclusive, and thriving environments.
